What to do in Lyon on a rainy day

Lyon is a two-river city with a compact centre, so a wet day does not mean a lost day. The strongest picks are fully indoors, close to a métro or tram stop, and worth two hours or more. Start with the Musée des Confluences at the southern tip of the Presqu'île: a science and society museum in a glass building, reached by tram T1 from Perrache. It is the best single answer for a family or a first-time visitor on a wet morning.

The Musée des Beaux-Arts, in a former Benedictine abbey off Place des Terreaux, is the pick for art and for anyone staying in Presqu'île. The Musée Lumière, in the family villa of the Lumière brothers, suits film fans and is a short tram ride from the centre. For food, the Halles Paul Bocuse is a covered market: spend an hour browsing, then eat lunch on the spot. The traboules, Lyon's covered passageways through old buildings, are free and keep you dry between Vieux Lyon and Croix-Rousse; some are private and closed on Sundays.

Almost everything here sits inside a 3 km band along the Presqu'île and the two rivers. The Musée des Confluences is the outlier, at the southern tip where the Rhône and Saône meet; tram T1 links it to Perrache in about 15 minutes. The Beaux-Arts and the Halles sit within a five-minute walk of each other at Hôtel de Ville. Vieux Lyon and its traboules are one métro stop away on line D. Mini World and the aquarium are east of the centre and need a tram or bus ride.

Museums in Lyon commonly close one weekday, often Monday or Tuesday, so check before crossing town. Many are free on the first Sunday of the month, which also makes them busiest.

Rain in Lyon often comes in short bursts rather than all day. If the sky clears by mid-afternoon, leave the museum and walk Vieux Lyon or climb to Fourvière for the view; if it sets in, the Halles plus a long lunch is the lowest-effort plan. Carry a compact umbrella rather than relying on shop awnings, and note that traboules have stairs and uneven stone floors.

Lyon's driest and most comfortable spells are usually late spring and early autumn, which is also when the city is busiest. Rain days cluster in spring and autumn, with summer thunderstorms possible in the afternoons. Winter is cold and grey rather than wet, and the December lights make an evening walk worthwhile even in poor weather.

For a rainy-day plan, weekday mornings are the quietest time in the museums. Avoid the first Sunday of the month if you dislike crowds, and check school holiday dates, when family venues such as the Confluences and the aquarium fill up.
