Lyon nightlife: best areas, bars and safety tips

Pick the area first, then the venue. Lyon's nightlife is clustered, and crossing the city between clusters after midnight is the main thing that ruins an evening. Vieux Lyon and the Presqu'île are 10–15 minutes apart on foot; Croix-Rousse and Guillotière are each one metro hop from the centre.

The list below is by area, not by ranking. Prices are 2026 estimates for a standard drink; hours are typical and shift by season and by night.

Lyon is cheaper than Paris for a night out. A pint in a central bar is usually €6–9, a cocktail €9–13, a glass of Beaujolais or Côtes du Rhône €5–8, and a coffee or soft drink €3–5 (2026 estimates). Happy hour, usually 17:00–20:00, cuts beer prices by a third or more in student areas.

Bouchons — the traditional Lyonnais restaurants — mostly serve at lunch and early evening and close by 22:30–23:00. Wine bars often close at 23:00–01:00. Pubs and cocktail bars run to 01:00–02:00. Clubs typically open at 23:00–00:00 and close at 04:00–06:00, with entry €10–20 including one drink (2026 estimates).

Sunday and Monday are the quiet nights: many bouchons and small bars shut, and clubs are thin. Thursday, Friday and Saturday are the full nights. In July and August, some venues close for holidays and student bars empty out; in December, expect private-party nights and higher club entry.

Lyon has a metro, tram and bus network (TCL) that covers every nightlife area in this guide. Metro lines A, B, C and D and trams run until roughly 00:00–00:30; after that, night buses take over on some routes. Check the TCL app or the TCL site on the day, because last departures vary by line and by season.

For a night out, the practical pattern is: metro in before 22:00, walk between venues inside one area, then either catch the last metro or take a taxi or rideshare. Taxis are metered; a cross-centre ride at night is usually €12–20 (2026 estimate). Rideshare pickup points around Vieux Lyon and rue Sainte-Catherine can be slow after 02:00.

Vélo'v, the city bike scheme, is useful for short hops in the early evening but less so after midnight, when you may be over the limit to ride and stations thin out. If you are staying outside the centre, check the last connection to your hotel before you go out, not after.

Lyon is generally a safe city at night, and the central nightlife areas are busy and well lit. The usual city rules apply: keep your phone out of sight on the metro, watch bags in crowded bars, and avoid walking alone through empty parks or the quieter parts of Guillotière and Part-Dieu late at night. If something happens, call 112 (EU-wide), 17 for police or 15 for an ambulance.

French bars serve food less often than British or American pubs, and kitchens usually close before the bar does. If you want dinner and then drinks, eat by 21:00 or plan a late snack: kebab shops and some bakeries stay open around Guillotière and the Presqu'île. Tipping is not expected — service is included by law — but rounding up or leaving 5–10% for good service is normal.

Dress codes are relaxed in most bars; some clubs on the Presqu'île and in Confluence ask for smart-casual and refuse trainers or sportswear. Smoking is banned indoors, so terraces are where smokers gather, and they stay busy even in winter. Many venues take cards, but keep some cash for small bars and for taxis.

The best months for a night out in Lyon are April to June and September to October: mild evenings, terraces open, and the student population in town. July and August are warm but quieter, with some venues closed for holidays and fewer students. December is festive, with Christmas markets and higher demand on weekends.

Within the week, Thursday to Saturday are the full nights. Sunday and Monday are the quietest. If you are in Lyon for the Fête des Lumières in early December, expect huge crowds in the centre and plan transport early; if you want a calm drink, stay in Croix-Rousse or Confluence instead.

For a first visit, one evening in Vieux Lyon and one in the Presqu'île covers the range without rushing. Add Croix-Rousse if you want a local night, and Guillotière if you want cheap and late.
