Los Osos

Base here 2 nights for Montaña de Oro and the bay, only with a car: no car, no Los Osos. Otherwise sleep in Morro Bay 5 mi north.

Los Osos and Baywood Park form one unincorporated town on the south shore of Morro Bay, in San Luis Obispo County. There is no downtown grid to sightsee: the draw is Montaña de Oro State Park, the estuary and quiet lodging, all reached by two roads. Come with a car, for 2 nights, and treat it as a nature base rather than a town.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is close to essential: sights sit 5–10 mi apart on two roads, South Bay Boulevard and Los Osos Valley Road. SLO RTA Route 12 links Los Osos with San Luis Obispo; check the current timetable and fare. Bicycles work on the flat bay roads; the park road climbs.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Baywood Park (2nd and 3rd St, Santa Maria Ave)

Walk to the bay, the Monday farmers' market and the tavern; the best pick without a car.

Los Osos Valley Road corridor

Motels and the road to San Luis Obispo; practical for one night in transit.

Pecho Valley Road / Montana de Oro edge

Closest to the park gate; quiet, dark and a drive from any food.

Watch out

Safety

Low-crime small town; the real risks are driving the two-lane roads at dusk, deer and cyclists, poison oak, and cold ocean water. Do not swim or wade the estuary; 911 works throughout.
  • Two roads in and out: a crash or closure on Los Osos Valley Road or South Bay Boulevard means a long detour.
  • Coastal fog can sit all day in summer; mornings inland are often clearer.
  • Poison oak lines the trails at Los Osos Oaks State Reserve: stay on the path.
  • Montana de Oro campground and park access can close for storm damage or fire rules: check California State Parks before you drive in.
  • Cell coverage is patchy toward the park and on the estuary.
