Arroyo Grande

Give Arroyo Grande half a day for the Village and Swinging Bridge, then sleep in Pismo Beach or San Luis Obispo: 1 night is enough.

Arroyo Grande is a small Central Coast town of about 17,700 people, one of the Five Cities group on US 101 between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara. Its draw is a compact historic Village with a 171 ft (52 m) pedestrian suspension bridge over the creek, plus barbecue and seafood restaurants. Most travellers pass through or stay one night and use it as a cheaper, quieter base for Pismo Beach and the dunes.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

You need a car for almost everything: the Village is walkable once you park, but the beaches, Lopez Lake and the outlet area are 5–20 min drives. San Luis Obispo Regional Transit Authority (SLORTA) runs buses to San Luis Obispo, Grover Beach and Pismo Beach; frequency is low, so check the timetable before relying on it.

Pismo Beach and Grover Beach

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are US 101 driving, summer fog on the coast road and rip currents at nearby beaches. Lock the car and leave nothing visible at trailheads and beach lots.
  • Coastal fog can sit over the town until midday in summer: plan beach time for the afternoon.
  • US 101 traffic backs up on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons in summer.
  • The Swinging Bridge is a pedestrian suspension bridge over a creek bed: hold the handrail and keep small children close.
  • Restaurant kitchens close earlier than the posted closing time on quiet weeknights: check before a late drive.
