Liège is Wallonia's largest city, 50 min by train from Brussels and about 1 h from Aachen, sitting where the Meuse meets the first hills of the Ardennes. It gets a fraction of the tourist traffic of Bruges or Ghent, so you can see the Prince-Bishops' Palace, the Bueren staircase and the Sunday river market without queues. The centre is walkable; the main station is 3 km out.

Getting around

The TEC tram runs Sclessin–Coronmeuse/Expo through the centre and past both stations; buses fill the gaps and share the same fares with transfers. Validate your ticket on every boarding; buy at stop machines, on buses (small notes) or at Espace TEC shops. The centre is walkable; Guillemins to the old town is about 30 min on foot. Hillsides are steep for bikes.

Watch out

Safety

A normal mid-size European city: watch pickpockets around Place Saint-Lambert and the Batte market, and stay on lit streets near the stations at night. The bigger practical risks are the steep stairways when wet and the last-tram cutoff.
  • Guillemins station is 3 km south of the centre: allow 30 min on foot or take the tram, not a taxi, unless you have bags.
  • Few bus lines run after midnight; check the last tram time before a late dinner.
  • Tickets are not sold on board trams: buy at the stop machine first.
  • The Sunday Marché de la Batte reroutes centre trams via Féronstrée; expect crowds and detours.
  • Central parking garages cost about €2.20 (≈ US$3) an hour; the one-way street layout is confusing, so park and walk.
