Where to stay in Laos: best areas and types of hotel

Laos is a slow country with a small number of visitor bases, and the railway decides the order you see them in. Pick the town first, then the street: in Luang Prabang the peninsula puts you inside the temple and night-market zone, while the Nam Khan side is quieter. In Vientiane the Mekong riverside is walkable to the night market and most sights. In Vang Vieng, the river side faces the karst; the main road is cheaper and busier.

Guesthouses are the backbone of Lao travel: family-run, often a wooden house with a few rooms, fan or air-conditioning, and a shared or private bathroom. They are cheap and usually clean, and the owner can arrange a bus or boat ticket. Mid-range hotels add reliable hot water, air-conditioning and breakfast; top-end places are concentrated in Luang Prabang and Vientiane, often in restored colonial buildings or riverside resorts.

Hostels with dorm beds exist in Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang and Pakse, and are the easiest way to meet other travellers. Homestays are offered in villages around Luang Namtha, Nong Khiaw and the Bolaven Plateau; expect simple bedding, shared meals and a fixed price per person. On the 4,000 Islands, most rooms are bungalows with a hammock and cold water.

In the low season (roughly May–September) you can usually arrive and walk into a room, and paying at the desk in kip is normal. In the high season (November–February) Luang Prabang fills, and around Lao New Year in mid-April transport and rooms sell out across the country. Book Luang Prabang and any place you must reach on a specific night; leave the rest flexible.

Prices are quoted in kip or US dollars depending on the property, and the kip rate moves, so check the day's rate before you compare. Many guesthouses take cash only, and few accept cards outside the main hotels. A passport is normally held overnight for registration; ask for it back when you check out.

Laos uses 230 V at 50 Hz with plug types A, B, C, E and F, so a universal adapter covers most devices. Air-conditioning is worth paying for in the hot months; in the cool season a fan room is fine at night. Hot water can be a small tank heater, so shower early if the guesthouse is full.

Wi-Fi is common but slow, and mobile data is often more reliable; a local SIM or eSIM is cheap. Cash is king: carry kip for guesthouses, markets and transport, and keep small notes. Tipping is not expected, though rounding up or leaving a small amount for guides and drivers is appreciated. Check your travel insurance covers the activities you plan, especially river sports in Vang Vieng and motorbike loops.
