Kvarken Archipelago is the Finnish half of a UNESCO World Heritage site shared with Sweden's High Coast, in the narrowest part of the Gulf of Bothnia off Vaasa. The land here is still rising about 8 mm a year after the ice sheet melted, so new skerries appear and shallow bays slowly close into lakes — the reason the site was listed. The archipelago holds some 6,550 islands, but almost all visitors only ever reach the roadside end of Björkö, where the free Svedjehamn trail, the De Geer moraines and the Saltkaret tower sit. The outer islands — Valsörarna, Mickelsörarna, Mässkär — are boat-only, served by seasonal cruises from late June to mid-August, and are the quiet bird country of the Bothnian migration route. There is no entrance fee anywhere; you pay for boats and beds, not for the landscape.

- You may walk and camp on uncultivated land away from homes, but not in the Valsörarna–Björkögrund nature reserve outside the designated areas.

- Designated campsites in the nature reserve are open August–April only, to protect nesting birds.

- The Saltkaret tower has stairs; the lower shore paths are the alternative for limited mobility.
- Boat cruises need a step down into the vessel; ask the operator about boarding help.

- Stay on marked trails and off nesting skerries, especially May–July.
- Book small-group cruises rather than private speedboat trips; they follow the permitted routes.
- Use the dry toilets and fire sites, and carry all rubbish back to the mainland.

How much does it cost to enter Kvarken Archipelago?
Nothing. There is no entrance fee for the World Heritage area, and the Svedjehamn trails and the Saltkaret tower on Björkö are free. You pay only for extras: a two-hour cruise from the Replot bridge is about €16, half-day cruises to Valsörarna about €35–55, and a rental cabin such as Björkören about €150 for six people (2026 estimates).
What are the best hikes in Kvarken Archipelago?
The 4 km Svedjehamn trail on Björkö is the one to do: it crosses the De Geer moraines and ends at the Saltkaret tower with views over the shallow sea. There are four designated nature trails in the archipelago in total, all short and easy, and the shore paths near the former fishing harbours show the cultural landscape. Longer routes are on the outer islands and need a boat.
When is the best time to visit Kvarken Archipelago?
Late June to mid-August, when the midnight sun keeps nights light, the sea is at its warmest and the boat cruises run. May and September are quieter and still good for walking, though cruises have stopped by September. Winter is dark and icy, with most services closed.
Do I need a car to visit Kvarken Archipelago?
Effectively yes for the free trails. Road 724 runs from Vaasa over the Replot bridge to Björkö and Svedjehamn, and buses reach Replot and Panike but leave a walk of about 1.5 km to the hut area. The outer islands have no road access at all and are reached by booked boat.
Can I camp in Kvarken Archipelago?
