First, decide where your trip starts. If Luang Prabang is your base, flying there saves a long transfer; if you want the widest choice and the easiest Thai border, fly to Vientiane and take the train or bus north. The railway between Vientiane and Luang Prabang has changed how people plan, so check current timetables.
Second, book flights early for peak season (November to February) and around Lao holidays such as Pi Mai (Lao New Year) in April, when domestic seats and guesthouses fill. Regional carriers connect Vientiane and Luang Prabang to Bangkok, Hanoi, Seoul, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and other Asian hubs; there are no nonstop flights from the US, UK, Canada, Australia or New Zealand, so you will connect.
Third, sort your visa before or on arrival. Many passports can get a visa on arrival at Vientiane and some land crossings, but rules and fees change; check the official source and carry passport photos and US dollars or kip for the fee if required.
