- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.
- Northern Alberta ↗No inter-town bus service; a private vehicle is required. Cold Shot and Red Arrow run Edmonton–Fort McMurray and Edmonton–Grande Prairie/Peace River coaches only.
- Northern Alberta ↗Winter road and equipment requirements (winter tires, block heaters, storm closures on secondary roads) — check with the rental company and Alberta 511 before travelling.
Lakeland is a lake-and-boreal-forest region in northeast Alberta, roughly 2.5–3.5 hours by road from Edmonton. It is not a resort strip: the lakes, parks and historic sites are spread across four counties and there is no public transit, so a vehicle decides what you actually see. Sleep in Cold Lake for services and the airshow, in Lac La Biche for the provincial parks and the canoe circuit, or in Bonnyville or St. Paul for a quieter, cheaper base. Two nights covers one lake and one historic site; four nights lets you add a second park and the Iron Horse Trail.

- Distances between towns are 30–90 minutes; do not plan three lakes in one day.
- Summer brings mosquitoes and blackflies near water — repellent matters more than a jacket.
- Winter driving on Highway 28 and 63 is ice and moose country; daylight is short from November to February.

Bags between cities
No luggage forwarding or left-luggage network here; travel with your bags and keep them in the car between bases. Cold Lake and Lac La Biche are the only towns with enough beds to make a same-day switch practical.
