Lac-BromeLac-Brome (Knowlton)

Give Lac-Brome one day if you have a car; sleep one night only if you are looping the Eastern Townships slowly. Without a car, treat it as a Knowlton village stop of 3–4 hours.

Lac-Brome is an amalgamated town of seven villages strung around a lake, and Knowlton is the one that matters for a visitor: a compact main street, a beach, a museum and a small theatre. It is 110 km south of Montréal off Autoroute 10, and the villages are too far apart to walk between, so a car decides how much of the place you actually see. Most travellers come for a summer day from Montréal or as a quiet night on an Eastern Townships loop.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

Walking covers Knowlton, including the Coldbrook River path and Douglass Beach. Between the villages you need a car: they sit 5–15 km apart and there is no scheduled local bus. Check current taxi and ride options locally before relying on them for an evening return.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 25–30 min

Highway 215 south by car

Hiking on Mont Sutton in summer, skiing in winter; pair it with a half day in Lac-Brome.

Door to door: About 20 min

Highway 104 west by car

Closest town with a full supermarket and year-round services.

Door to door: About 45 min

Autoroute 10 east by car

Lake Memphremagog waterfront and a bigger choice of restaurants.

Door to door: About 50 min

Highway 139 north then Autoroute 10 west by car

Zoo and gardens; a family day out rather than a quiet one.

Sherbrookecaution

Door to door: About 1 h

Autoroute 10 east by car

Worth it for a city evening, but it eats the day if you also want the lake.

Door to door: 1 h 30 min by car; longer by coach with the transfer

Autoroute 10 north by car; Limocar coach runs Montréal to Bromont, then you need a taxi or arranged transfer for the last 25 km (16 mi)

Too far for a return day trip on top of seeing Lac-Brome, and the coach does not reach the town itself (check).

Knowlton village

Walk to the main street, the pub, the theatre and the museum; the only place where you can leave the car parked.

Lakeside Road / Douglass Beach side

Closest to the beach and the water; a short drive or a longer walk into the village.

Around the lake and the outer villages

Cottages and B&Bs in Bondville, Fulford, West Brome and Iron Hill; cheaper or larger, but you drive for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a small Québec town; the real issues are rural driving, icy winter roads and unlit back roads at night. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight at trailheads and the beach car park.
  • Villages are 5–15 km (3.1–9.3 mi) apart with no scheduled bus between them: without a car you are limited to Knowlton.
  • Many restaurants and shops keep short, seasonal hours and close on some weekdays: check before driving out.
  • Beach swimming is lifeguarded only in summer daytime; outside that, no supervision.
  • Winter driving on Highway 243 and the back roads is icy. Québec requires winter tires in cold months: check the current dates and rules before you drive.

Say or show

  • Bonjour — Hello (bon-ZHOOR)

  • Combien ça coûte ? — How much is it? (kom-BYEN sa KOOT)

  • Une table pour deux, s'il vous plaît — I would like a table for two (ewn TABL poor DUH, seel voo PLEH)

French is the main language; a bonjour before you ask anything goes a long way. Tipping 15–20% at restaurants is expected.
