Lac-Brome
Lac-Brome (Knowlton)
Give Lac-Brome one day if you have a car; sleep one night only if you are looping the Eastern Townships slowly. Without a car, treat it as a Knowlton village stop of 3–4 hours.
Lac-Brome is an amalgamated town of seven villages strung around a lake, and Knowlton is the one that matters for a visitor: a compact main street, a beach, a museum and a small theatre. It is 110 km south of Montréal off Autoroute 10, and the villages are too far apart to walk between, so a car decides how much of the place you actually see. Most travellers come for a summer day from Montréal or as a quiet night on an Eastern Townships loop.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Villages are 5–15 km apart with no scheduled bus between them: without a car you are limited to Knowlton.
- Many restaurants and shops keep short, seasonal hours and close on some weekdays: check before driving out.
- Beach swimming is lifeguarded only in summer daytime; outside that, no supervision.
- Winter driving on Highway 243 and the back roads is icy. Québec requires winter tires in cold months: check the current dates and rules before you drive.
Very safe for a small Québec town; the real issues are rural driving, icy winter roads and unlit back roads at night. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight at trailheads and the beach car park.
