Best day trips from Kraków: how to get there and what to see

Kraków sits close to four very different days out: a memorial, a salt mine, mountains and a pilgrimage town. The table below compares them by travel time, cost band and whether you need a car. Times are one-way from Kraków city centre and are 2026 estimates.

Auschwitz-Birkenau is the reason many people come to Kraków, and it is the one trip to plan first. The site is in Oświęcim, about 60 km west. Buses from the Kraków bus station and trains from Kraków Główny both run through the day; the bus drops you closer to the museum entrance, while the train station is a short walk or local bus ride away. Entry is by timed ticket, and in summer slots disappear days ahead. Allow four to five hours on site including the shuttle between the two camps, plus travel. This is a memorial, not a sight: follow the rules on behaviour, and do not book it back to back with another heavy day.

Wieliczka Salt Mine is the easy half-day. Trains from Kraków Główny take about half an hour, and buses run too. You visit only with a guided group, so the time you spend underground depends on the slot you book; the classic route runs two to three hours and involves a lot of stairs. It is cool underground year-round, so bring a layer. Bochnia, a smaller salt mine east of Kraków, is the quieter alternative if Wieliczka is sold out.

Zakopane and the Tatras are a full day, not a half day. Buses and trains take roughly two to two and a half hours each way, which leaves time for the town, a short walk or a cable car, but not a serious hike. If mountains are the point of your trip, sleep in Zakopane instead of day-tripping. In winter the same route serves ski resorts and the roads can be slow.

Częstochowa and the Jasna Góra monastery are a pilgrimage destination and a straightforward train or bus ride of about two to two and a half hours. The monastery complex, the icon and the crowds are the draw; the rest of the city is ordinary. It suits travellers interested in religious history more than general sightseeing.

The Eagle's Nests are a chain of limestone castles and ruins between Kraków and Częstochowa, including Ogrodzieniec. Public transport between them is thin, so this is the one trip on the list that really wants a car or an organised tour. With a car you can link two or three castles in a day; without one, pick a single castle and accept a long, awkward journey.

Transport is the small part. A return bus or train to Oświęcim, Wieliczka or Zakopane is usually 20–60 PLN (about 5–15 USD) per person. Guided entry is the bigger line: Auschwitz-Birkenau guided entry runs roughly 90–150 PLN, Wieliczka 100–200 PLN depending on route and language, and a private Eagle's Nests tour 200–400 PLN per person. Add food and any local bus or taxi at the far end. Booking direct with the operator is normally cheaper than a hotel-arranged tour, but tours include the transfer and remove the logistics.

Decide the night before which trip you are doing and buy the ticket then; same-day tickets for the memorial sites are the main thing that goes wrong. Keep one buffer day in Kraków with nothing booked, because weather changes mountain plans and sold-out slots change memorial plans. If you are basing yourself in Kraków for several days, pair one heavy trip with one light one rather than doing Auschwitz and Wieliczka on consecutive days.
