Where to stay in Kraków: best neighborhoods and hotels

Kraków is compact: most visitors can walk between the Old Town, Kazimierz and the river. The choice is less about distance than about what you want outside your door — sightseeing, bars, or a lower price with a short tram ride.

Prices below are 2026 estimates for a double room in high season (May–September, December). Low season and midweek can be 20–40% cheaper.

Stare Miasto is the safe default. You sleep inside the Planty park ring, with Rynek Główny, Wawel Castle and the main railway station all reachable on foot. Streets just off the square are loud until late; pick a room on a side street or an upper floor if you are a light sleeper. This is also the most convenient base for day trips, because the station is a short walk away.

Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter, is where many repeat visitors stay. It has the densest run of bars, cafés and restaurants, plus the Remuh Synagogue and Plac Nowy. Rooms are often cheaper than the Old Town and the atmosphere is more local at night. The trade-off is noise around Plac Nowy and ulica Szeroka, and a 15–25 minute walk to the main square.

Podgórze sits across the Vistula and is the value pick. It is quieter, has its own square (Plac Bohaterów Getta) and puts Schindler's Factory and the former ghetto area close by. Trams cross the river in 10–15 minutes, so you are not cut off. Nowa Huta, further east, is the cheapest option and interesting for its planned socialist-era layout, but it is a long tram ride from the centre.

For a short trip built around trains, staying near the main station (Kraków Główny) saves time on the Auschwitz-Birkenau and Wieliczka days. The area is a mix of hotels, offices and a large shopping centre, so it feels less like a historic quarter.

Kraków is cheaper than Warsaw for accommodation, and much cheaper than Western European capitals. Hostel beds start around 80–150 zł per night in a dorm; private rooms in hostels and guesthouses run about 200–350 zł. Mid-range hotels and apartments sit around 300–550 zł, and four- or five-star hotels and boutique apartments in the Old Town go from about 600 zł upward.

Expect the highest rates for New Year, the Christmas market in December, and long weekends in May. Booking 2–4 weeks ahead helps in high season; for New Year, book several months ahead. Apartments booked directly or through platforms often undercut hotels for stays of three nights or more, but check the cleaning fee and whether reception is staffed.

Kraków's centre is walkable, so base yourself once and use trams only for Podgórze, Nowa Huta or the station. Buy tram tickets from machines or an app and validate them on board; fines for riding without a validated ticket are common.

If you arrive at Kraków Airport, the train and bus both run to the centre in roughly 30–40 minutes — check current timetables before you book a room near the station. For day trips to Auschwitz-Birkenau and Wieliczka, an early start is easier from the Old Town or station area than from Kazimierz.

Ask about street noise before booking: Plac Nowy in Kazimierz and the streets immediately around Rynek Główny are the two loudest spots. Air conditioning matters in July and August, and many older buildings do not have it. A local SIM or eSIM makes tram apps, tickets and maps simpler.
