The honest verdict

Kotor's old town is a walled maze between the sea and a steep hill, with a fortress reached by a long stair. The trips that go wrong are the ones that climb at noon in July, arrive with big suitcases to a car-free old town, or share the lanes with several cruise ships at once. Four clusters cover a first visit: the old town, the fortress trail, the market and shore, and the Dobrota waterfront. Perast and Lovćen are day trips from one kept bed.

Three mistakes to avoid

Paying: Euro; cards work in hotels and most restaurants, but keep cash for market stalls, the fortress and small cafés.
