Where to stay in Kingston: best neighborhoods and hotels

Kingston sits about 12–15 km south of Hobart on the Channel Highway, at the top of the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. It is a suburb with a real town centre, not a resort strip: you stay here for space, parking, supermarkets and easy access to both Hobart and the Huon Valley, and you accept that you will drive or take the bus for most sightseeing.

For a first visit, central Kingston near Channel Court is the safe pick: walk to shops and cafés, catch a Metro bus to Hobart, and drive south to the Huon in under an hour. Kingston Beach suits travellers who want to walk to the sand and eat near the water. Further south along the Channel Highway, around Margate and Snug, rooms are often cheaper and quieter, but you need a car for everything.

Central Kingston clusters around Channel Court Shopping Centre and the Channel Highway. This is where the supermarkets, pharmacies, takeaways and the main bus stops are. Accommodation is mostly motels, apartments and a few larger hotels, with free parking that central Hobart often charges for. If you are travelling without a car, this is the only part of Kingston where daily life works on foot.

Kingston Beach is a short drive east, on a sheltered bay with a beach reserve, a playground and a handful of cafés. It is the pick for slow mornings and evening walks, and it is popular with families in summer. The trade-off is that you still drive for groceries and for Hobart.

South along the Channel Highway, Margate, Snug and Coningham are small coastal settlements with holiday houses and a few B&Bs. They suit travellers basing themselves for the Huon Valley, Bruny Island ferries at Kettering, and quiet weekends. Distances are short in kilometres but slow on winding roads, so plan 30–40 minutes to Hobart.

If your trip is mostly about Hobart's restaurants, MONA and the waterfront, staying in Hobart itself is simpler; Kingston makes more sense as a base for the south, or if you want a house with parking and a garden.

Kingston undercuts central Hobart on parking and often on room rates, though the gap narrows in festival weeks. Expect motels and pub-style rooms at the lower end, self-contained apartments and beach houses in the middle, and the best waterfront places at the top. Prices rise sharply for the Hobart summer festival season and around Christmas and New Year.

Self-catering is worth it here: supermarkets in central Kingston are close, and a kitchen saves money on a region where restaurants are spread out. Holiday houses often charge a cleaning fee and a minimum stay of two or three nights.

Book early for December to February, Easter and the Hobart winter festival period, when the whole greater Hobart area fills. Outside those windows, midweek rates in Kingston are noticeably lower.

A car makes Kingston work. If you would rather not drive, stay within walking distance of the Channel Highway bus stops and check Metro Tasmania timetables before you commit, because evening services are limited. For the airport, pre-book a shuttle or taxi; the drive from Hobart Airport is roughly 25–30 km.

Check whether your room has heating that suits a Tasmanian winter, and whether parking is on-site. Many older motels have thin walls and road noise from the Channel Highway; ask for a room away from the road if you are a light sleeper.
