Kingston airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Kingston sits on the Channel Highway about 12 km south of Hobart, with the airport on the opposite side of the city. Every option below is a road option; the differences are cost, luggage space and how far you are going afterwards.

If you are staying in Kingston itself, a taxi or shuttle from the airport is the simplest. If you are heading into Hobart first, a hire car or a rideshare both work, but parking in the CBD is the thing to plan for.

Hobart Airport has a taxi rank outside the terminal and rideshare pickup points nearby; both run to Kingston on the Southern Outlet and Channel Highway. Expect 20–25 minutes outside peak times and longer in the morning and late afternoon, when traffic builds on the approach to Hobart.

Taxis are metered, with airport surcharges possible; rideshare prices move with demand, so a late-night arrival can cost more than a mid-morning one. Neither needs booking in advance at the airport, though pre-booking a taxi helps for very early departures from Kingston.

If you are going on to Hobart rather than Kingston, the same trip is roughly 15–20 minutes and a similar fare band.

Metro Tasmania runs the public network across greater Hobart, including services between the city and Kingston. Fares are low — a few dollars a ride — but services are less frequent in the evening and on Sundays, and the airport itself is not served by a dedicated rapid route.

For most visitors with luggage, the bus is a fallback rather than a first choice. If you do use it, check the current timetable and route numbers before you land, and allow extra time for the walk between stops and your accommodation.

There is no train. Tasmania has no passenger rail network, so any page promising a train from the airport is wrong.

Hobart Airport has the main hire-car desks for the region, and picking up there is the standard move if you plan to see the Huon Valley, the Channel and the south coast. From the airport, Kingston is a short run; from Kingston, Hobart is about 15–20 minutes up the Southern Outlet.

Distances are short but the roads are not always fast: the Channel Highway is a two-lane road through towns, and wildlife is a real hazard at dawn and dusk. Fuel is around A$2 a litre (2026 estimate) and stations are easy to find in Kingston and Hobart.

The transfer itself is the small part of the budget. The bigger variables are whether you hire a car and where you stay, since Kingston is a base for the south rather than a destination in itself.

A few practical points make the transfer smoother, especially if you are arriving on an evening flight or leaving before dawn.
