Kingston itinerary: 1, 2 and 3 days

Kingston sits south of Hobart on the road to the Huon Valley and the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. That position is the whole argument for staying here: you get a calmer, usually cheaper bed and still reach the city, the mountain and the southern villages in under an hour.

Pick by how you travel, not by how many sights Kingston itself holds.

Start in the town centre: the foreshore at Kingston Beach, the short walk along the river mouth, and a coffee. This is a residential beach suburb, so the morning is about the water and the view across the Derwent estuary rather than a tick-list of sights.

Drive north to Hobart for the afternoon. Salamanca Place, the waterfront and Battery Point are compact and walkable; MONA is a ferry ride up the river and eats most of a day on its own, so choose one. Come back south in the evening and eat near the beach.

If you have no car, treat this as a Hobart day and check the local bus timetable before you commit.

Day two is the reason to base here. Head south along the Channel Highway through Margate and Snug, then on to Kettering, where the ferry crosses to Bruny Island. Bruny needs a full day or an overnight, so on a two-day plan either commit the whole day to it or stay on the mainland side.

The alternative loop runs inland to Huonville and the apple-growing Huon Valley, with Cygnet as a small, slow stop. Both routes are scenic drives with short walks and food stops rather than big attractions. Distances are modest but the roads are winding, so allow more time than the map suggests.

With three days you can stop splitting Hobart across afternoons. Give the city a full day: Salamanca and the waterfront in the morning, MONA in the afternoon if the ferry times work, or the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and the botanic gardens if they do not.

The third day goes to Richmond, a historic village north-east of Hobart with a convict-era bridge and a compact old centre. It pairs well with a Hobart morning or with the Coal River Valley wineries on the way back. Alternatively, use the day for Bruny Island if you skipped it on day two.

Keep one evening free for the drive back and an early night before a flight; the airport is north of Hobart, not next to Kingston.

Kingston is a base, so the budget is mostly fuel, food and one or two paid entries. Figures below are 2026 estimates and should be checked against current listings.

Hiring a car is the single biggest line. If you are relying on buses, the numbers change completely and the itinerary shrinks to Hobart plus the town itself.

Book the car before you arrive; southern Tasmania is thin on public transport and the good drives need one. Fuel up in Kingston or Hobart rather than in the villages.

Weather changes fast and the Channel and Huon roads are exposed. Carry a layer even in summer. Summer evenings are long, which helps if you are squeezing a drive in after a Hobart day.

If you are flying out, allow extra time: the airport is north of Hobart, so a Kingston departure means crossing the city or taking the bypass.
