Kilkee is a small Victorian seaside town on the Clare coast, population about 1,200, built as Limerick's summer resort and still busiest in July and August. The horseshoe bay is sheltered and swimmable, the cliff walk starts at the west end of the beach, and Loop Head is 25 km further west. Most visitors come for one night as a stop on the Wild Atlantic Way; two nights lets you add Loop Head and Carrigaholt without rushing.

Getting around

The village is walkable in 10 minutes end to end. For the cliffs, Loop Head, Carrigaholt and Kilbaha you need a car or bike; Local Link bus 339 runs a loop from Kilrush via Kilkee and Loop Head twice on weekdays and gives about four hours at the lighthouse. Bus Éireann 336 links Ennis and Kilrush to Kilkee, six times Monday–Saturday and three times Sunday.

Watch out

Safety

Kilkee is a low-crime seaside town and the main risks are environmental: cold Atlantic water, cliff edges with no barriers, and fast-changing weather. Swim where others swim, keep back from the edge, and tell someone your Loop Head plan.
  • Out of season many restaurants and cafés close; the hotels are the reliable fallback.
  • The Loop Head road is narrow and exposed to wind; cyclists should plan for a long pedal back.
  • Swim at the lifeguarded end of the bay and watch for the tide at the Pollock Holes.
  • Mobile signal is patchy: 4G from Eir and Three, weak Vodafone, no 5G in town.
  • The West Clare Railway heritage site at Moyasta has been closed; check before driving out.
