Kilkee
Cill Chaoi
Give Kilkee one full day and one night: swim at the Pollock Holes, walk the cliffs, then drive Loop Head. Without a car, cut it to a day trip from Ennis.
Kilkee is a small Victorian seaside town on the Clare coast, population about 1,200, built as Limerick's summer resort and still busiest in July and August. The horseshoe bay is sheltered and swimmable, the cliff walk starts at the west end of the beach, and Loop Head is 25 km further west. Most visitors come for one night as a stop on the Wild Atlantic Way; two nights lets you add Loop Head and Carrigaholt without rushing.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, first names quickly; avoid: Over-formality; it reads as coldness
- Conversation: Banter, weather and sport; self-deprecating humour; avoid: Opening with Northern Ireland, religion or the Famine
- Pubs: Buy your round; chat at the bar; avoid: Leaving a round without buying one
- Identity: Say Ireland, or the Republic when you need to distinguish; avoid: 'Southern Ireland' and calling it British
- Driving: Lift a finger from the wheel to thank drivers who pull in for you; avoid: Stopping on narrow bends for photos
Scams and watch-outs
- Out of season many restaurants and cafés close; the hotels are the reliable fallback.
- The Loop Head road is narrow and exposed to wind; cyclists should plan for a long pedal back.
- Swim at the lifeguarded end of the bay and watch for the tide at the Pollock Holes.
- Mobile signal is patchy: 4G from Eir and Three, weak Vodafone, no 5G in town.
- The West Clare Railway heritage site at Moyasta has been closed; check before driving out.
Kilkee is a low-crime seaside town and the main risks are environmental: cold Atlantic water, cliff edges with no barriers, and fast-changing weather. Swim where others swim, keep back from the edge, and tell someone your Loop Head plan.
