Kenya
Kenya on a budget: daily costs and money-saving tips
A backpacker day in Kenya costs about US$100–190 per person, and park fees are most of it, so budget travellers should keep safari nights few and spend the rest of the trip in Nairobi, on the coast or around Kisumu. A mid-range day runs US$370–740. Matatus, the SGR train and hostels set the floor.

Details
Kenya is not a cheap country to travel in, but the cost is concentrated in one line: park and reserve fees. A hostel bed in Nairobi can cost less than a single day of Masai Mara reserve fees. That shapes every budget decision. If you want a low daily spend, keep safari nights few and spend the rest of the trip in Nairobi, on the coast or around Kisumu.
Transport is the second lever. Matatus (shared minibuses) are the cheapest way around cities and between towns on main routes. The SGR train between Nairobi and Mombasa is KES 1,500 in economy and KES 4,500 in first class, which undercuts a flight and is more comfortable than a long bus. Domestic flights to the Mara are the fast option, not the cheap one.
Food is easy to keep low. A local meal of nyama choma with ugali and sodas for two runs KES 1,500–2,500, and a Tusker beer in a bar is KES 250–400. Supermarkets, kiosks and small local restaurants cost far less than hotel dining. If your lodge rate is full board, food drops to near zero on safari days.
Accommodation splits the tiers. The parent country estimate puts a backpacker bed at about US$15–30 a night, typically a dorm or simple room in Nairobi or on the coast; treat that as an estimate, not a rate that holds everywhere in Kenya. Mid-range lodges run US$200–350, usually full board. Conservancy camps are all-inclusive and priced accordingly. Camping safaris are the cheapest way to see wildlife, because you share a vehicle and the per-person price falls.
Add tips: US$10–20 a day covers guides, camp staff and drivers, and it is expected rather than optional on most safaris. Carry small shilling or US dollar notes for this.
Summary table
Per person per day, sharing a room, international flights not included. Safari days include park fees. 2026 estimate.
| Tier | Bed | Food | Transport | Sights | Extras | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Backpacker | US$15–30 | US$10–20 | US$10–30 | US$60–100 | US$5–10 | US$100–190 |
| Mid-range | US$200–350 | US$0–30 | US$50–120 | US$100–200 | US$20–40 | US$370–740 |
| Comfort | US$800–1,500 | incl. | US$150–300 | incl. or US$100–200 | US$40–80 | US$1,000–2,100 |
Sights = daily park or conservancy fees on safari days. Mid and high lodge rates are usually full board, so food shrinks. Add US$10–20 a day in tips.
Tips
Time the trip around the fee calendar. Masai Mara reserve fees are US$100 per non-resident adult per day from January to June and US$200 from July to December, so a low-season safari can halve that line. Check current low-season dates and rates before you book; July to December is peak because of the migration and school holidays.
Book the safari as a group camping trip rather than a private vehicle. You share the 4x4 and the guide, and the per-person price falls sharply. Ask exactly what the quote includes: park fees, conservancy fees, meals and water are often listed separately.
Use the SGR train for the Nairobi–Mombasa leg and matatus for shorter hops. Fly only when time matters more than money. Check the train and airport pages before you book, since schedules and terminals change.
Pay park fees yourself where possible. Fees go through eCitizen by card or M-Pesa, not cash at the gate, so a quote that bundles them should show the same figure. Confirm before you pay a deposit.
Register M-Pesa with a local SIM and your passport. Many small businesses prefer it to cards, and it saves carrying cash. Keep some shillings for markets and tips.
Travel insurance is worth pricing before you cut anything else. Check whether a policy covers medical evacuation for safari and hiking trips, since that is the one cost you cannot absorb on a budget.
FAQ
Questions people ask
How much does a budget trip to Kenya cost per day?
About US$100–190 per person per day on a backpacker plan: hostel or guesthouse, local food, matatus and a group camping safari. Park fees are the largest item and do not fall with a cheaper bed. 2026 estimate.
What is the cheapest month to visit Kenya?
Check current rates: low season is usually cheaper than the July–December peak, and Masai Mara reserve fees are US$100 per day January–June against US$200 July–December, so a low-season safari can halve that cost.
How can I save money in Kenya?
Keep safari nights few, join a group camping safari, take the SGR train and matatus instead of flights, eat local food, stay in hostels or guesthouses, and travel outside the July–December peak. Confirm whether park fees are included in any safari quote.
