Rules in force · 5Land borders between Central Asian states open and shut w…
  • Central Asia ↗Keep every hotel registration slip or its e-registration record until you leave Uzbekistan and Tajikistan; border officers can ask for proof of where you slept and fine gaps.
  • Central Asia ↗Land borders between Central Asian states open and shut with politics and demarcation deals; confirm the exact post is open to foreigners the week you cross.
  • Kazakhstan ↗Visa-free entry applies to many nationalities, usually up to 30 days; check your own passport on the official government portal before you book, and keep your entry record.
  • Kazakhstan ↗Use a ride-hailing app (Yandex Go or inDrive) or the airport rank; do not accept unmarked cars offered in the arrivals hall.
  • Kazakhstan ↗Some mountain areas near the Kyrgyz and Chinese borders need a border-zone permit; ask your driver or the park office before you go.

The Kazakhstani North is four provinces — Akmola, North Kazakhstan, Kostanay and Pavlodar — on flat steppe that runs into Siberia. Astana is the one base with flights, hotels and food; Burabay National Park is 2.5 hours away by road and worth a night in summer. Everything else is a long drive between small cities. Pick one base, add one park, and fly between the far cities instead of driving.

Astana and Akmola
Short summer, long winter. −20 °C (−4 °F) or lower in January; 30 °C (86 °F) days in July. Wind year-round.
Kostanay and North Kazakhstan
Colder and wetter than Astana; the same short June–August window.
Pavlodar
Siberian edge; smoke and haze from steppe fires are possible in late summer.

June to August is the only comfortable window. May and September work with a warm jacket. Winter travel is possible but is about ice, short daylight and cancelled flights.
