The Central Highlands is steppe, industry and a hard history, not a mountain holiday. Come for the Karlag memorial, Karkaraly's granite-and-pine hills and the Korgalzhyn wetlands, and treat Karaganda as the bed base. Trains and the M36 make it easy; the distances and the winter make it a summer-only region.
