The Kazakh Desert is Kazakhstan's south: the Qyzylqum and Aral Karakum plains across Kyzylorda, Turkistan and Zhambyl regions. It holds most of the country's old monuments, the Aral Sea, and the land borders to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. The distances are the plan: Shymkent is the only real city base, Turkistan and Taraz are day-trips or one-night stops, and the Aral Sea and Baikonur are a separate flight-and-drive trip from Kyzylorda.
