Beaver is a small high-desert town at about 1,800 m on the I-15, between the Tushar Mountains to the east and open desert to the west. It works as a one-night break on the Salt Lake City–Las Vegas/St. George run, not as a base: the sights are a fort, a scenic canyon road and a reservoir, all reached by car. Two nights only if you want the mountain drive and Cove Fort without rushing.

Getting around

You need a car. Main Street links the two I-15 exits and crosses Center Street (Route 21 west) and East 200 North (Route 153 east). The town itself is walkable, but Cove Fort, the reservoir and the mountain road are all a drive away.

Safety

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are winter driving on I-15 and Route 153, long empty stretches west on Route 21, and summer heat and altitude if you hike.
  • Route 153 east becomes unpaved past the ski area: turn back rather than cross the Tushars.
  • Winter snow and ice on I-15 and Route 153; check road conditions before driving.
  • Services are thin outside town: fill the tank and carry water before heading west on Route 21.
  • Summer afternoons are hot at this elevation; hike or drive early.
