Kazakhstan is a mid-priced country by regional standards, but the budget tier is genuinely cheap if you stay in hostels, eat where locals eat and use buses. The two big cities, Almaty and Astana, cost about the same as each other. The tenge has lost value against the dollar in recent years, so check the rate before you set a daily cap.
The single biggest lever is transport between places. A flight on the long Almaty–Astana leg runs about KZT 45,000 one way, and a day with a car and driver to Charyn Canyon or the Kolsai lakes costs KZT 40,000–80,000. Those two lines decide whether your trip lands in the budget band or doubles it. Buses and shared taxis keep intercity costs down; trains are the comfortable middle option and worth pricing before you book a flight.
Food is where the budget tier is easiest to hold. A stolovaya (canteen) lunch is KZT 2,000–3,500, and beshbarmak in a restaurant is KZT 4,000–8,000. Cooking in a hostel kitchen, or buying bread, cheese and fruit at a bazaar, pushes the food line below KZT 3,000 a day.

Tips
Sleep in hostels or guesthouses outside the city centres, and book direct where you can. In Almaty, staying near a metro line cuts taxi spending sharply.
Eat your main meal at lunch. Stolovayas and business-lunch menus are the same food at a lower price than dinner service.
Use ride-hailing apps rather than hailing taxis on the street: the fare is shown upfront, which removes the negotiation that usually costs visitors money.
Keep small tenge notes. Bazaar stalls, rural shops and shared taxis often cannot break a large note, and cards are unreliable outside the cities.
Travel in the shoulder months, roughly April–May and September–October, when beds and tours are cheaper than in high summer and the mountain roads are usually open. Winter is cheapest of all if you can handle the cold.
