Kamphaeng Phet is a small lower-northern town on the Ping River, roughly halfway between Bangkok and Chiang Mai, whose 14th–16th-century temple ruins, laterite walls and forts form part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing shared with Sukhothai. It gets a fraction of Sukhothai's visitors, has no railway and almost no tourist infrastructure, so it suits travellers who want upcountry Thailand and are happy to move by bicycle, songthaew or hired car.

Getting around

There is no real public transport: no metered taxis and few tuk-tuks or motorcycle taxis. Reddish-brown songthaews run irregularly between the bus terminal and Big C. Most of the centre is walkable, and a bicycle is the best way to cover the historical park (about ฿30/hour, mountain bikes about ฿50, rented at the Khet Aranyik entrance or some guesthouses). For the hinterland, rent a motorbike or arrive with a hired car.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime provincial town; the real risks are traffic on Route 1, stray dogs, heat in March–April and the early evening shutdown that leaves you without dinner if you plan late.
  • The town shuts down early: most restaurants and even the night market wind down between 20:00 and 21:00, so eat before then.
  • The intercity bus terminal is about 2 km from the centre on the far bank of the Ping; onward songthaews are irregular, so ask your guesthouse to arrange a pickup.
  • English menus are rare outside a handful of places; expect to point or use a translation app.
  • The historical park zones are fenced and ticketed (08:00–18:00); Nakhon Chum's ruins are open and unticketed but far more ruined.
  • March–April brings heat and regional smoke; check air quality before booking those weeks.
