Half a day: from Gjakova (12 km (7.5 mi), 20–25 min by local bus), walk the Oda, the tower museum and the Çoku Mosque, then move on to Peja or Prizren.

Junik is a town of 3,943 people (2024 census) in western Kosovo, 12 km from Gjakova on the Gjakova–Deçan road. The Oda, the Brahim Hoxha tower museum, the Isufaj kulla and the Çoku Mosque sit within walking distance, so half a day covers the town. The Erenik valley, Moronica forest and the Junik Mountains behind it are the reason to stay longer.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovin…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Balkans ↗Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in pockets of Croatia's former front line: outside towns keep to tarmac and waymarked paths, and treat red triangle signs and taped-off fields as absolute.
  • Balkans ↗Serbia refuses onward entry to travellers who reached Kosovo from a third country and then try to cross straight into Serbia; route Kosovo–Serbia legs through North Macedonia or Montenegro, or start the loop in Serbia.
  • Balkans ↗Hire cars need written permission from the rental company and valid insurance for every country on the line; Kosovo sells its own border insurance and some contracts exclude Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia outright.
  • Kosovo ↗Kosovo sets its own entry rules and is outside the EU and Schengen area; check the official requirements for your passport.
  • Kosovo ↗If you enter Kosovo from a country other than Serbia, Serbian border officials may not allow you to continue into Serbia from Kosovo. Check both your government's Kosovo and Serbia advice before planning that leg.
  • Kosovo ↗Foreign-registered and rental cars may need separate local insurance at the border; check with the rental company before crossing.

Watch out

Safety

Junik is generally safe. The real risks are winter road and trail conditions and unlit rural roads at night; keep valuables secure on buses.
  • Local buses from Gjakova run several times a day, not all day: check times before you travel.
  • Mountain trails can be icy in winter; bring proper gear.
  • ATV and mountain-bike rental prices vary by provider and duration: agree the total first.
