Useful apps for Jamaica: transport, maps, translation

Set up before you fly. Download the Jamaica map in Google Maps for offline use, install WhatsApp and confirm your number works, and add your bank or card app with a travel notice so a payment does not get blocked on day one. If you are buying a local SIM or eSIM, Digicel and Flow sell prepaid plans at the airports and in towns and ask for your passport; do that at the airport if you want data from the moment you leave arrivals.

On the ground, WhatsApp does more work than any travel app. Guesthouses send gate codes, drivers confirm pickups, tour operators send meeting points. Save your accommodation and driver as contacts the first day. For coaches, Knutsford Express sells seats between Kingston, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and other towns; book ahead for holiday weekends and note that the bus is a scheduled service, not a taxi.

For getting around locally, expect licensed taxis (often JUTA or hotel-arranged) and route taxis rather than app dispatch. Ride-hailing exists but coverage is thin outside Kingston and Montego Bay, so treat it as a bonus, not a plan. Agree the fare before you get in, and carry small JMD notes because drivers rarely break large bills.

Translation is rarely needed: English is the official language and Jamaican Patois is widely spoken, so a phrasebook app is optional. A currency converter is genuinely useful because prices are quoted in JMD and USD depending on where you are. Keep a screenshot of your accommodation address and a paper backup of key numbers in case data drops out in the mountains.
