Jamaica in December: what to expect

December is the start of Jamaica's dry, busy season. On the north and west coast — Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios, Port Antonio — days sit around 28–30 °C with a steady sea breeze and short, passing showers rather than the long afternoon soakings of May and October. Sea temperatures stay warm enough for long swims.

Kingston and the south coast are drier and hotter than the north, often around 32 °C, because the Blue Mountains wring out much of the rain before it reaches them. In the Blue Mountains themselves, expect 10–20 °C at altitude, mist and afternoon cloud, and near-freezing temperatures on Blue Mountain Peak at dawn — a fleece matters if you hike for sunrise.

Hurricane season ends on 30 November, so December carries little storm risk. That said, 2026 is a recovery year: Hurricane Melissa struck on 28 October 2025, and repairs in the west may still be underway.

Crowds build through the month. The first week of December is the value window: dry weather, open attractions and rates that are still medium rather than peak. From roughly 20 December, Christmas and New Year arrivals fill the north-coast resorts, and flights and rooms are at their most expensive of the year.

Book accommodation and airport transfers before October if you are travelling over the holidays. If your dates are flexible, the first ten days of December or the second week of January give you the same weather for noticeably less money.

The month's centrepiece is Christmas. On Christmas Eve, Grand Market street fairs run in towns across the island with music, food stalls and late-night shopping — Kingston's is the largest. Christmas Day and Boxing Day (25–26 December) are public holidays, so banks, offices and many shops close, and some restaurants run holiday-only menus.

New Year's Eve brings fireworks and parties, especially in Kingston, Montego Bay and Negril. Beyond the holidays, December is a quiet month for major festivals; the big music events sit in January (Rebel Salute, check) and February (Reggae Month).

With dry weather across the island, December suits a classic split: four or five nights on the north or west coast, then two or three in Kingston and the Blue Mountains or on the south coast. Negril's Seven Mile Beach and Montego Bay are the easiest first bases, with Ocho Rios good for Dunn's River Falls and the north-east coast.

Kingston is at its most comfortable in December — hot but not punishing — and makes a good base for the Blue Mountains, coffee farms and Port Royal. If you want the driest, hottest corner of the island, head for Treasure Beach and the south coast, which sits in the mountains' rain shadow.

Note for 2026: some western attractions and coastal roads may still be under repair after Hurricane Melissa. Confirm opening status before you build a day around a specific site.

Pack for warm days and breezy evenings: light clothing, swimwear, a hat, high-factor sunscreen and insect repellent, since mosquitoes are active around dusk even in the dry season. Bring a light rain shell for passing showers and a warmer layer if you plan to hike in the Blue Mountains — the peak at dawn is close to freezing.

Also useful: reef-safe sunscreen for swimming, a refillable water bottle, and a printed or offline copy of your bookings in case holiday-period Wi-Fi is slow. Smart-casual clothes cover most resort restaurants, which often ask guests not to wear swimwear at dinner.

December sits at the front of Jamaica's best stretch. January and February continue the dry, breezy pattern with high crowds and prices, plus Rebel Salute in St Ann (check) and Bob Marley's birthday events on 6 February. November is the shoulder: rains ease late in the month and hurricane season ends on 30 November, so early November is cheaper but less predictable.

October is the month to avoid if you can — it is the wettest month with the highest storm risk, and the month Hurricane Melissa made landfall in 2025. If you want good value with decent weather, look at June instead.
