Jaipur public transport: tickets, passes and apps

Jaipur does not sell one ticket that covers the city. There is no metro-wide travelcard equivalent to Delhi's or Mumbai's, and city buses are run by the state transport undertaking with fares paid on board. For most visitors the practical answer is to treat each trip as its own purchase: book an app cab or auto for point-to-point, and hire a car with driver for a full day of sightseeing.

If you are staying near the old city and only moving between Hawa Mahal, City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Johari Bazaar, walking plus a couple of short autos is cheaper and often faster than any ticket. If you are covering Amber Fort, Nahargarh and the outskirts in one day, a car with driver at ₹3,500–5,500 including fuel and driver is the standard Rajasthan solution and removes parking and haggling stress.

Fares below are 2026 estimates. App fares move with demand, so the number you see in the app is the one that counts. Auto fares outside the app are negotiated; agree the price before you get in, and carry small notes because drivers rarely have change for ₹500.

Cash still works everywhere for autos, buses and small shops, and it is the fallback when an app fails. UPI (the Indian instant payment system) is used by almost everyone locally, but it needs an Indian bank account or a compatible wallet, so most short-stay visitors rely on cash and cards instead.

For app cabs, the fare is charged to the card or wallet linked to your Ola or Uber account, so no cash changes hands. For autos hailed on the street, pay cash at the end. Contactless bank cards are accepted at hotels, malls and larger restaurants, but whether they work for a bus or auto fare in Jaipur needs checking.

Jaipur has no zonal fare system for visitors to learn. App cabs and autos price by distance and time, not by zone. City buses run on numbered routes across the city and charge a low fare per ride, but the exact fare structure needs checking.

The one place a zone-like structure matters is the metro: Jaipur Metro Line 1 links Mansarovar in the south to Badi Chaupar at the edge of the old city, with fares rising by distance travelled. If your hotel is near a Line 1 station and your day is along that corridor, the metro is the cheapest fast option. A second line has been planned for years; check whether any part is open before you plan around it.

Jaipur International Airport (JAI) sits about 13 km south of the old city (check). The default is an app cab booked before you exit: ₹300–600 to the centre, 25–40 minutes depending on traffic (check). Prepaid taxi counters inside the terminal are an alternative if you have no data; expect a similar or slightly higher fare (check).

There is no metro or train link from the airport into the city (check), so a cab, auto or hotel transfer is the only practical option. If you arrive late, book the cab in the app before landing or arrange a hotel pickup, because the queue for autos thins out after midnight.

Agree the auto fare before you get in, or use the app version where the price is fixed. Drivers may cancel an app booking and ask for cash instead; if that happens, rebook rather than negotiate at the roadside. Confirm the number plate matches the app before you open the door.

For a full day of sights, a car with driver usually beats stringing together autos: you keep your bag in the car, skip parking searches and set your own pace. Agree in advance whether tolls, parking and the driver's night allowance are included. Drivers often earn commission at shops and craft workshops, so say clearly if you do not want shopping stops.
