Iwaki is a coastal city of about 345,000 people in southern Fukushima, on the JR Joban Line between Mito and Sendai. It is one of Japan's sunniest and mildest cities, with a national-treasure temple, a good aquarium, a lighthouse on a cliff and a large hot-spring waterpark. Sights are spread over a wide area, so a car or careful bus planning matters more here than in most Japanese cities.

Getting around

The city is wide and low-density. JR Joban Line links Iwaki, Uchigo and Yumoto; local buses reach Onahama and the coast but run infrequently. A rental car is the fastest way to combine Shiramizu, the coast and the fossil sites in one day. Taxis are available at Iwaki Station.

Watch out

Safety

Iwaki is a calm regional city and feels safe day and night. The real risks are long distances between sights, infrequent rural buses and coastal weather; carry cash and check the last bus back.
  • Sights are 10–20 km apart; do not plan three far-apart stops on foot.
  • Some coastal Joban Line sections have run on replacement buses since 2011: check before you travel.
  • Spa Resort Hawaiians and Aquamarine are busiest at weekends and in school holidays.
  • Rural buses may stop by early evening; check the last service back.
