Isaan is Thailand's largest region — 20 provinces on the Khorat Plateau, bounded by the Mekong to the north and east. It gets a fraction of the country's tourist traffic, so transport is slower and English thinner than in Bangkok or Chiang Mai. The cities are 2–4 hours apart by bus or train. Pick two or three bases and day-trip from them; a loop through all of Isaan eats your trip in transit.
