West, Hyderabad: neighborhood guide

West Hyderabad, often called Cyberabad, grew with the IT industry from the late 1990s. It is a grid of glass office campuses, gated apartment towers, malls and wide arterial roads, not a historic quarter. HITEC City is the office core; Madhapur, just east of it, mixes Inorbit Mall, the Shilparamam crafts village, granite outcrops and Durgam Cheruvu lake. Gachibowli holds large corporate offices plus the University of Hyderabad and IIIT Hyderabad. The Financial District is mostly software and real estate despite the name, and Serilingampally, where the first software offices opened, is one of the MMTS suburban rail terminals.

The result is a district that works well and looks new. You come here for a comfortable hotel, a mall dinner and a short commute, not for bazaars or monuments. The Old City, Charminar and the Golconda fort area are all well east of here, so treat West as a base and plan half-day trips out.

Stay in West if your days are tied to HITEC City, Gachibowli or the Financial District, or if you want a modern hotel with a pool and reliable power at a lower price than a central heritage property. It also suits longer stays and families: supermarkets, clinics, malls and international restaurants are all within a few kilometres.

Do not stay here if Hyderabad for you means Charminar, the Chowmahalla Palace, Laad Bazaar and biryani in the old lanes. Those are 15–20 km east and the cross-city drive can take an hour in traffic. If you have only two nights and want the historic city, base in Central or the Old City instead and visit West for a meal or a mall.

A middle option: split the stay. Two nights central for the monuments, then move west for the airport run or a work block.

Food in West leans corporate. HITEC City and Madhapur have food courts, global chains, cafes and mid-range Indian restaurants inside and around the malls; Gachibowli and the Financial District add hotel restaurants and office-campus canteens that are not open to the public. For a proper local meal, look for Andhra and Telangana thali places and biryani houses in Madhapur and Serilingampally, where the lunch crowd is office workers.

Hyderabadi biryani is the dish to order, with haleem in the Ramadan season and Irani chai and Osmania biscuits as snacks. Vegetarian food is easy to find and usually labelled. If you want the classic old-city biryani experience, plan it as a trip east rather than expecting it here.

West Hyderabad sits on the city's western edge. The metro Blue Line runs out to this side, with stations serving the HITEC City and Raidurg area; check current station names, timings and fares before you rely on it. MMTS suburban trains stop at Serilingampally and other west-side stations, useful if you are near a line. App cabs and auto-rickshaws are the default for door-to-door trips; agree the fare or use the meter, and expect surge pricing at office hours.

From Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, in the south of the city, the drive to West Hyderabad is long: allow 45–75 minutes outside peak and more in the morning and evening rush. Check the airport's official site or your hotel for current transfer options and prices. Within West, distances between HITEC City, Gachibowli and the Financial District are too far to walk comfortably in the heat; use cabs or the metro for the main hops.
