South, Hyderabad: neighborhood guide

South Hyderabad is the strip of the city that runs from the Old City's southern edge out to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad. It is not a sightseeing district. It is where the airport, the outer ring road, new apartment blocks and a scatter of hotels sit, with Himayat Sagar — a lake and earthen dam west of the airport road — as the one green stop.

The area is large and loosely defined, so "South" can mean anything from the airport belt to suburbs closer to the Musi river. Distances are long and traffic on the airport road is heavy at peak hours. Treat South as a transport base, not a neighbourhood to wander.

For the city's actual sights — Charminar, the bazaars, Golconda Fort, the museums around the Hussain Sagar — you want Central, the Old City or the west. South works when the airport is the point of the trip.

Stay in South if you land late, leave early, or have a long layover and want a bed close to the terminal rather than a 60-minute ride into town. Airport-side hotels in Shamshabad are the practical choice; some run shuttle transfers, so ask before booking.

Do not stay here for a normal Hyderabad trip. You would spend two hours a day in traffic reaching the places you came to see, and the streets around your hotel have little for a visitor. Central Hyderabad puts you near the metro, the museums and the food; the Old City puts you next to the monuments.

A middle option: one night near the airport at the start or end of a trip, and the rest of your nights in Central or the Old City.

Food in South is mostly hotel restaurants, airport food courts and suburban Andhra and Hyderabadi places along the main roads. Expect biryani, Andhra meals with rice and curries, and tiffin — idli, dosa, upma — at breakfast. Airport terminals have the widest choice of any single spot in the area, at airport prices.

For the food Hyderabad is known for, eat in the Old City or Central: biryani houses, Irani cafés with tea and biscuits, and haleem stalls in Ramadan. If you are based in South, plan meals around your hotel or a short ride to a main-road restaurant rather than expecting a food street outside.

Vegetarian food is easy to find across the city, and most kitchens will tell you what a dish contains. Tap water is not for drinking; stick to sealed bottles, filtered water or boiled water (check).

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport sits at Shamshabad, roughly 30 km south of the city centre. By road that is 45–90 minutes depending on traffic; allow more in the evening peak. App-based cabs and prepaid airport taxis are the usual options, and many airport hotels run shuttles — confirm the schedule when you book.

The Airport Express Metro links the airport with the city network; check current timings and the interchange you need for your final stop (check). MMTS suburban trains and city buses serve parts of the south, but coverage is patchy away from the main corridors.

Inside South, distances are long and sidewalks are inconsistent, so most trips are by cab or auto-rickshaw. Agree the fare or use the meter, and keep small notes for change.
