The Hunter is two trips in one: a working coastal city (Newcastle) and a wine valley (Pokolbin/Cessnock) about an hour inland. Trains reach Newcastle and the valley towns, but wineries, beaches and national parks need a car or a booked tour. Two nights is a weekend; three to four nights covers city, vineyards and Lake Macquarie or the dunes.
