Best time to visit Houston: weather, crowds and events by month

Houston sits in the Gulf and Deep South climate zone: spring and autumn are comfortable, summer is hot and humid, and hurricanes reach the coast. The table below turns that into a booking decision — which months to aim for, which to avoid, and what each one costs in crowds and money.

March and April are the sweet spot. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, rain is moderate, and the city's biggest event, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, runs for about three weeks from late February or early March. Book that window early if you want it; avoid it if you want quiet hotels.

October is the second pick. The summer heat breaks, hurricane season is still technically running but the risk is lower than in September, and hotel prices sit below summer levels. November is also comfortable and quiet apart from Thanksgiving week.

June through August is the season to plan around, not to cancel. Expect mid-30s °C with high humidity and afternoon storms. Indoor Houston — museums, the theater district, the tunnels downtown — handles it well, but outdoor walking and day trips to Galveston get uncomfortable by midday.

Houston's problem is not winter cold — it is summer heat and Gulf storms. The city is low, flat and close to the coast, so a hurricane or tropical storm can bring both wind and serious flooding. Hurricane season officially runs from 1 June to 30 November, with the statistical peak from late August through October.

That does not mean you should avoid the whole season. It means you should buy flexible flights and accommodation for trips in September and October, and check the National Hurricane Center forecast in the week before you travel. If a storm is named and heading for the Texas coast, airlines usually issue waivers and hotels allow changes; the earlier you booked flexible, the easier that is.

Winter is mild but not guaranteed warm. January and February average roughly 8–17 °C, with occasional fronts that drop close to freezing for a day or two. Snow is rare. Spring brings thunderstorms and, on the Plains west of the city, the start of tornado season.

Houston is a business and convention city, so hotel demand follows events more than seasons. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in early March is the single biggest draw, filling hotels across the city for about three weeks. Thanksgiving week, Christmas to New Year, and large conventions at the George R. Brown Convention Center also push rates up.

The cheapest months are usually January, February and August — August because of the heat, not because there is nothing on. If you are flexible, midweek stays in spring and autumn are noticeably cheaper than weekends, and downtown hotels often discount on weekends when business travellers leave.

For day trips, the coast is the main draw. Galveston is about an hour's drive southeast and Bolivar Peninsula is reached by ferry from Galveston; both are best from March to May and in October, and both are hot and storm-prone in late summer.

Houston is cheaper than New York, Boston or San Francisco for both rooms and food. The figures below are 2026 estimates for a standard double room and a mid-range meal; treat them as planning bands, not quotes.

Flights into IAH or HOU follow the same pattern as hotels: cheapest in January, February and August, most expensive around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Domestic fares from the US East or West Coast are usually lowest booked six to ten weeks out.

Build the trip around air conditioning. Houston's museums, the theater district and the downtown tunnel system are all indoors, which makes a July or August visit workable if you accept that you will move between buildings rather than walk the streets.

Rent a car unless you are staying only downtown or in the Museum District. The METRORail is useful for a few central corridors, but the city is spread out and most attractions, including Space Center Houston, need a car or a rideshare.

Check the calendar before you book. A rodeo week and a quiet week in the same month can differ by US$100 or more a night. If your dates are fixed, book early; if they are not, shift them by a week.
