Houston has two airports. George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) sits about 37 km north of downtown; William P. Hobby (HOU) sits about 11 km south. Neither has a rail line into the centre, so the real choice is express bus versus car.

The express bus is the value pick from IAH if your flight lands in its operating window and you can carry your own bags. From Hobby, the bus needs a transfer and rarely beats a rideshare on a two-person trip.

IAH: the nonstop downtown express bus is the simplest transit option. It runs from the airport terminals to downtown, roughly every 30–45 minutes, and takes 30–60 minutes depending on traffic. It is aimed at airport workers and travellers with light luggage; confirm the current stop, schedule and fare at the airport information desk or on METRO's site before you rely on it.

IAH: the local METRO bus is cheaper but slower. You ride into the city and transfer to reach downtown, which can take 60–90 minutes with bags. It works if you land early, have time and want the lowest fare.

Hobby: there is no direct downtown bus. You take a local bus and transfer, or use a shuttle to a transit centre. For most travellers a taxi or rideshare is the better call.

Taxis at both airports are metered, and IAH has a flat rate to the downtown area. Rideshare pickup is at signposted zones outside the terminals; follow the app's walking directions. Rental cars sit in separate lots reached by shuttle, and downtown hotel parking adds US$25–50 a night.
