Honduras itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks

Pick by nights, not by ambition. Honduras rewards slow island time and punishes rushed road days: the mainland legs are long, and the ferries and small planes that connect the Bay Islands run on their own schedule.

The table below is the short version. Each route is detailed in the sections that follow.

Fly into Roatán if you can. It has the only airport in the Bay Islands with regular international connections, so a 7-day trip never needs to touch the mainland. Spend 4 nights around West End or West Bay, dive or snorkel the reef, and keep one day free for a boat trip or a beach with no cruise ship in port.

Then move to Utila for 3 nights. Utila is the cheap dive-course island and the better bet for whale sharks in season. The link between the two islands runs via La Ceiba by ferry or by small plane; treat it as a half-day of travel and confirm the current schedule before you book accommodation.

If you would rather not move at all, take 7 nights on Roatán and day-trip instead. You lose Utila but gain two travel days back.

This is the route for travellers who want the Maya site and the reef. Start in Copán Ruinas, reached most easily from Antigua, Guatemala by shuttle, or from San Pedro Sula if you are flying in. Two nights is enough: one afternoon in the town, one full morning at the ruins at opening with a guide hired at the gate.

Then take a daytime shuttle to San Pedro Sula airport, about 3 hours, and fly to Roatán the same day. Six nights on Roatán gives you time for the west-end reef, a day at West Bay outside cruise-ship hours, and a mangrove or fishing trip. Finish with 2 nights on Utila if you want a second island, or add them to Roatán if you do not.

Book the Copán–airport shuttle and the domestic flight as one plan. If the flight is cancelled, the fallback is a bus or shuttle to La Ceiba and the ferry, which costs you a day.

Two weeks lets you cross the mainland without rushing. From Copán Ruinas, move to Lake Yojoa for 2 nights of birds, waterfalls and quiet, then to a lodge on the Cangrejal River near La Ceiba for 2 nights of rainforest and rafting. La Ceiba is also the ferry port for Utila, which makes the next hop simple.

Give Utila 4 nights and Roatán 4 nights. That is enough for a dive certification on Utila and still leaves time to enjoy Roatán rather than just arrive. Fly home from Roatán.

Keep every mainland move in daylight. The parent guide for Honduras is blunt about this and it is the single rule that most changes how a two-week trip feels: daytime shuttles, no overnight buses, no overnight city stays.

Three weeks buys the western highlands and the Caribbean coast. Add Gracias, the colonial town below the Celaque cloud forest, and Tela for beaches, Garífuna villages and the Lancetilla gardens. Both are slow, low-key stops that work well between Copán and La Ceiba.

Finish with a night on Cayos Cochinos, the small cayes inside a marine reserve, reached by boat from La Ceiba or Roatán. One night is the usual pattern; some travellers stay two and wish they had stayed three.

This route has more moving parts, so build in one buffer day before your flight home. Weather on the Caribbean coast is the usual reason plans slip, and September to October is the wettest stretch.

Book the Bay Islands legs first. Domestic flights to Roatán and Utila fill up in high season, and the ferry from La Ceiba is the only alternative. Once those dates are fixed, the mainland fits around them.

Carry cash in lempiras for ferries, shuttles, island taxis and small guesthouses. Cards are widely accepted in West End and West Bay but much less so on the mainland outside Copán Ruinas and the bigger hotels.
