How to get to Honduras: airports, flights and border crossings

Fly into Roatán (RTB) if the Bay Islands are your trip: it has nonstop US and Canadian service and puts you on the reef the same day. Otherwise use San Pedro Sula (SAP) for Copán and the mainland, or connect via a US hub. Land borders from Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua work by day only.

Airports and routes

Honduras has four airports that matter to visitors. Roatán (RTB) sits on the island itself and is the only one with a serious schedule of nonstop flights from the US and Canada, which is why divers and beach travellers should aim for it first. San Pedro Sula (SAP) is the busiest mainland field, with the widest choice of connections and the shortest transfer to Copán Ruinas and the north coast. Tegucigalpa (XPL) serves the capital and the south, but the mountain approach and road transfers make it a poor first choice unless your trip is centred there. La Ceiba (LCE) handles the ferry-and-flight link to Utila and the Bay Islands.

From North America, nonstops concentrate on Miami, Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale and the New York area, with seasonal Canadian service to Roatán. From Europe, Australia and New Zealand there is no nonstop: you connect through a US hub, Mexico City or Panama City. Build in a long connection on the way home, because a delayed island departure can break a tight same-day transfer.

Fares swing hard by season. The dry months from December to April and the northern summer are peak; September and October are cheapest and also the wettest. Book two to four months out for the best balance of price and schedule.

Flight times and costs

Flight times below are gate-to-gate for the air leg only; add connection time. Costs are 2026 estimates for a round trip in economy and move a lot with season and how early you book.

If you are coming from Australia or New Zealand, expect a full day of travel and at least two connections, usually via the US west coast and a US hub. From the UK and Ireland, one stop in the US or Europe is normal.

Land and sea crossings

Overland entry is straightforward but slow, and the rule that matters is daylight. Cross in the morning, carry small US dollar notes for fees, and do not arrive at a remote post after dark. The main crossings are from Guatemala at Corinto and El Florido (the usual route to Copán Ruinas), from El Salvador at El Poy, and from Nicaragua at Las Manos and Guasaule. Buses run from Antigua, Guatemala City, San Salvador and Managua toward the border towns, with onward connections to San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa and Copán.

By sea, the practical options are cruise calls at Roatán and the ferry links between La Ceiba and the Bay Islands. Cruise passengers usually get a day ashore; independent sailors should clear in at an official port of entry and expect paperwork. There is no useful scheduled passenger ferry from the mainland to another country.

  • Corinto and El Florido — Guatemala, the Copán Ruinas route
  • El Poy — El Salvador, toward Tegucigalpa and the south
  • Las Manos and Guasaule — Nicaragua, toward the Pacific and Managua
  • La Ceiba — ferries to Roatán and Utila (check schedules)

Entry rules and practicalities

Most Western passport holders get 90 days on arrival, but rules and enforcement change, so confirm before you book and check whether you are entering as a tourist or on a longer stay. Your passport should have at least six months left. Some nationalities need a visa in advance; the visa page covers that in detail.

On arrival, expect a short form and a stamp. Keep the entry slip — you may be asked for it when you leave, and overstaying carries a fine. If you are crossing by land, the officer may ask for proof of onward travel and a rough plan; a printed booking helps.

Money and connectivity are the two things people forget. Bring US dollars in small, clean notes for border fees and taxis, and set up a data plan before you land so you can book a transfer on arrival. Airport taxis and island transfers are the usual first cost; agree the price before you get in.

  • Passport valid at least 6 months; check your nationality's visa rule
  • Keep the entry stamp slip until you depart
  • Carry small US dollar notes for land-border fees
  • Arrange an eSIM or local SIM before or at the airport
  • Buy travel insurance that covers diving if you plan to dive

What would change the plan

If your dates are fixed and the only affordable fare lands at San Pedro Sula late at night, do not drive onward in the dark: sleep near the airport and move in the morning. If a storm is forecast in hurricane season (roughly June to November), island flights are the first to be cancelled, so keep a mainland buffer night before an international departure. And if you are combining Honduras with Guatemala, entering Copán Ruinas from the Guatemala side is often cheaper and simpler than doubling back through San Pedro Sula.

Questions people ask

What is the best airport to fly into for Honduras?

Roatán (RTB) if you are going to the Bay Islands — it has the most nonstop US and Canadian service and puts you on the island the same day. For Copán Ruinas and the mainland, San Pedro Sula (SAP) is the practical choice.

How long is the flight to Honduras from the US, UK, Canada, Australia and NZ?

From Miami about 2 hours; Houston, Atlanta or Dallas 2.5–3.5 hours; New York 4–5 hours; Toronto 4.5–5.5 hours. From London 13–16 hours with one or two stops. From Sydney 22–30 hours with at least two stops.

Can I enter Honduras by land or sea?

Yes. The main land crossings are Corinto and El Florido from Guatemala, El Poy from El Salvador, and Las Manos and Guasaule from Nicaragua. By sea, cruise ships call at Roatán and ferries link La Ceiba with the Bay Islands.

Do I need a visa for Honduras?

Most Western passport holders get 90 days on arrival with a passport valid at least six months. Some nationalities need a visa in advance, and rules can change, so confirm before booking.

Is it safe to cross a land border after dark?

No. Cross in the morning, use official posts, and plan to reach your next town before nightfall. Remote crossings are slow and transport thins out in the afternoon.

How much is a flight to Honduras?

As a 2026 estimate, round trips run about US$250–700 from US gateways, C$600–1,100 from Canada, £650–1,100 from the UK and A$1,800–3,000 from Australia. Peak season and late booking push these higher.
