Hobart itinerary: 1, 2 and 3 days

Hobart itself is a small agricultural town on US-183 in Kiowa County, western Oklahoma. It is a stop, not a destination you build a week around. The reason to come is the country around it: the Wichita Mountains, the old resort town of Medicine Park and the army city of Lawton, all within about an hour's drive.

Pick by how much driving you want and whether you care about the mountains at dawn. If you are passing through on US-183 or US-62, one day is enough. If you want bison, granite peaks and a swim, give it two. Add a third only if Fort Sill and Lawton's museums interest you.

Start downtown in the morning. The Kiowa County courthouse square and the surrounding blocks are the walkable core; an hour covers the storefronts and the county history displays. Check locally for current opening hours before you plan around any single building.

Spend the middle of the day on the roads out of town — the farmland grid north and west of Hobart is the real landscape here. Eat lunch in town, then use the afternoon either for a short drive toward the Wichita Mountains or to continue on US-183 if you are through-routing.

Sunset from a county road outside town is the best free thing in the area. Drive back before dark: rural Oklahoma roads have no lighting and deer are common.

Day two is the reason most travellers come. Drive east on OK-9 and US-62 toward Medicine Park, a small stone-built resort town at the edge of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is free to enter and holds bison, longhorn cattle, prairie dogs and granite peaks; the scenic drive through the refuge is the standard loop.

Medicine Park has a walkable main street, a swimming hole and places to eat. It makes a better overnight than Hobart if you want an early start on the refuge road, when wildlife is most active and the heat has not built.

Practical points: fill the tank before you leave Hobart, carry water, and check refuge hours and any seasonal closures before you go. Some gates close at night, so do not plan a late exit.

Day three heads into Lawton, about 20 minutes south of Medicine Park. The city has the Museum of the Great Plains and the Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum, both worth a few hours if you like military and frontier history. Fort Sill is an active army post, so expect an ID check at the gate and check visitor rules before you arrive.

Lawton also has the practical things Hobart lacks: more hotels, more restaurants and a regional airport. If you are flying in, Lawton–Fort Sill Regional Airport is the closest option; otherwise you drive from Oklahoma City, roughly 1.5 hours away.

If you have a third day and no interest in museums, use it for a second refuge loop at sunrise instead, or push further into the Wichita Mountains for a short hike. Trails are exposed; start early and carry more water than you think you need.

Hobart is cheap by US standards. The main costs are fuel and lodging, and both are lower here than in a big city. Figures below are 2026 estimates for one person, excluding travel to Oklahoma.

You need a car. There is no practical bus or rail service linking Hobart, Medicine Park and Lawton, so plan to drive or rent. Distances look short on a map but the roads are two-lane and slow.

Weather drives the plan. Spring and autumn are the comfortable windows; summer afternoons regularly pass 35 °C and the refuge has little shade. Winter is quiet and can bring ice, which closes rural roads.
