Getting around Hobart: public transport, passes and taxis

Hobart sits on US-183 in southwest Oklahoma, roughly 110 km south of Lawton and about 130 km from Altus. Distances between towns are short on the map but long without a vehicle, and there is no rail or intercity coach network to lean on. The table below sets out what each mode is actually good for.

A car is the practical answer for almost every trip in and around Hobart. US-183 runs through town and links north to Lawton and south toward Altus, and the drive to Lawton takes roughly an hour and a half. Fuel up in town before longer runs; services thin out on the smaller county roads.

Parking is not a problem. On-street spaces and small lots around downtown are free or inexpensive, and you will rarely circle for a spot. If you are renting, pick up at Lawton–Fort Sill Regional Airport or in Lawton, since Hobart itself has no rental counter worth planning around.

Watch for the usual US rules: speed limits drop sharply at town edges, and deer are common on rural roads at dusk.

Downtown Hobart is compact. The main blocks around the courthouse and the old commercial strip take about 15 minutes to cross on foot, so a downtown hotel or motel puts the museum, shops and cafés within a short walk. Sidewalks exist on the core streets but become patchy a few blocks out, and summer heat plus winter wind make longer walks unpleasant.

Walking is a good choice for an evening meal or a morning coffee, not for reaching the highway strip or the lake.

Public transit in Hobart is limited. Any in-town bus or senior/paratransit-style service runs on a call-ahead or limited-schedule basis, so confirm days, hours and fares locally before you build a plan around it. Do not assume a fixed route will be running when you need it.

Taxis are not cruising the streets. You book one ahead, often from Lawton or Altus, and pay a call-out or long-distance fare. Ride-hailing apps work in Lawton but coverage in Hobart is thin: a car may be available, or you may wait a long time with no match at all. Have a phone number for a local cab as a backup.

This is the main reason travellers without a car should stay downtown and pre-book anything time-critical, such as an early airport run.

The numbers below are 2026 estimates for planning, not quotes. A rental car plus fuel is usually the cheapest way to cover several people and several stops; taxis and ride-hailing only make sense for one-off trips where you would otherwise be stuck.

Book the car before you arrive, especially in summer and around Fort Sill graduation weekends when Lawton-area rentals tighten up. Keep cash for small parking meters and tips, though cards work almost everywhere.
