Ho Chi Minh City in April: what to expect

April is the last full dry-season month in southern Vietnam. Expect hot, humid days with strong midday sun, little rain and long daylight. The parent country data rates the south as "hot" for April, moving to "wet" from May, so this is the month before the afternoon downpours begin.

The practical effect: mornings and late afternoons are comfortable for walking, while 11:00–15:00 is best spent indoors, in a café, or in a pool. Humidity makes 34 °C feel heavier than the number suggests, so build in shade and water breaks rather than pushing through a full day on foot.

For most of April, crowds are medium and prices are medium — the same rating the parent country page gives the whole of Vietnam for the month. Hotel rates in Districts 1 and 3 are close to their normal level, and the main sights are busy but manageable.

That changes sharply around 30 April – 1 May. Reunification Day and Labour Day combine into a long weekend, and the country's own holiday data flags it as high impact: beach towns and Hạ Long fill up, and domestic transport sells out. In Ho Chi Minh City itself, expect busier flights into Tân Sơn Nhất, fuller hotels and higher fares for the last days of the month and the first days of May.

If your dates are flexible, the first three weeks of April are the better-value window. If they are not, book flights and accommodation as early as you can.

April has one major national holiday and one public holiday that can shift the date of a long weekend.

Reunification Day and Labour Day (30 April – 1 May) is the big one. It is a high-impact holiday: domestic travel peaks, and city streets and public spaces host events. Exact programmes change yearly — check locally.

Hùng Kings' Day falls on the 10th day of the third lunar month, which lands around 16 April in 2027 — check the exact date for your year. It is a public holiday with medium impact; the main ceremonies are at the temples in Phú Thọ province, far to the north, but domestic flights get busier around the long weekend it creates.

Beyond the public holidays, April is a normal working month in the city, so you are not competing with a festival calendar.

April suits the city itself and the delta around it. The heat is manageable if you split the day: temples, markets and museums in the morning, air-conditioned stops or a pool at midday, and the riverfront or a rooftop in the evening.

Day trips work well because rain is unlikely to wash them out. The Mekong Delta and Cần Thơ are reachable as a long day or an overnight, and the coast at Vũng Tàu is a short run for a beach fix. If you want cooler air, Đà Lạt in the Central Highlands is the standard escape from the southern heat.

Keep the long weekend in mind: if you plan to leave the city on 30 April or 1 May, book the transport first and build the trip around it.

Pack for heat and sun, not for rain. Light, loose clothing in breathable fabrics, a hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen are the basics. A light layer helps for heavily air-conditioned cafés, buses and planes.

Footwear should handle uneven pavements and the occasional wet patch; sandals plus one pair of closed shoes covers most days. Bring a refillable water bottle — you will drink more than you expect — and a small umbrella or light shell if you are staying into May, when the afternoon showers begin.

March is also dry and slightly less hot, with medium crowds and prices — a good alternative if you want the same conditions with a little less heat. May is when the wet season starts: still warm, but expect afternoon downpours and a caution rating on the country page. June is wetter and busier with school holidays.

If your trip spans regions, remember that no single month is good everywhere in Vietnam: February to April is the best compromise for a north-to-south route, and April keeps the south dry while the north is warming up.
