Hiriyur
Skip Hiriyur unless you need a break on the NH-4 between Bangalore and Hubli: half an hour for the Mari Kanive dam and a coconut, then move on.
Hiriyur is a roadside town 160 km north of Bangalore, known for Karnataka's oldest dam, Mari Kanive, on the Vedavati river. The climate is dry, the town is a transport junction, and most visitors use it as a quick rest stop rather than a destination. One hour covers the dam and a fresh coconut drink.
