First time in Hanoi? What to know before you go

Hanoi is a walking city with a small set of anchors. Do these in your first two days, then let the rest of the trip be food and wandering.

The lake is the compass. Hoàn Kiếm sits at the south edge of the Old Quarter; the 1.7 km loop takes about 30 minutes on foot and is busiest before 7am with locals doing tai chi and badminton. The Ngọc Sơn temple on its island is a small ticket.

The Old Quarter's 36 streets are the reason most people come. Each lane once sold one trade; today it is a mix of kitchens, coffee shops and shops. Walk it in the morning when the pavements are still passable.

The Temple of Literature, the Imperial Citadel and the Hồ Chí Minh Mausoleum are the state monuments. The mausoleum is the one with a dress code and a queue, and it closes for part of the year for maintenance.

For a first evening, the Thăng Long water puppet theatre near the lake is the easy cultural pick: one hour, no language needed, book a day ahead in high season.

Hanoi is cheap by US or European standards but not free. A bowl of phở or bún at a busy Old Quarter stall is a few dollars; a sit-down meal with drinks in a tourist-area restaurant costs several times that. Beer at a bia hơi corner is the cheapest drink in the city.

Museums and monuments mostly run daytime hours and close one day a week, often Monday. The mausoleum opens only in the morning and closes for roughly two months a year for maintenance; check before you build a day around it.

Taxis and ride-hailing are metered or app-priced; agree the fare or use the app. Airport taxis should use the meter — if the driver offers a flat price far above the app quote, take the app instead.

Most first-timers arrive at Nội Bài airport, about 35 km north of the centre. A metered taxi or app car takes roughly 45–60 minutes depending on traffic; the public shuttle bus is far cheaper but slower and drops at a few fixed points. Allow extra time in the evening rush.

Within the city, walking is the default in the Old Quarter and around the lake. Ride-hailing apps work well and are usually cheaper than street taxis for short hops. Cross the road at a steady pace — traffic flows around pedestrians rather than stopping.

For onward trips, Hanoi is the northern base: Ninh Bình is about 2 hours by road, Hạ Long City about 2.5–3 hours, and Sa Pa and Hà Giang are overnight or long-day journeys. Domestic flights leave from Nội Bài for Đà Nẵng, Huế and Ho Chi Minh City.

Carry small notes. Many stalls and markets cannot break a 500,000 VND note early in the day, and cash is still the norm outside hotels and larger restaurants.

Dress for the season. Oct–Apr is the dry, cooler window and can be genuinely cold in December and January, especially at night. May–Sep is hot and wet, with heavy afternoon downpours and occasional typhoon effects on the coast.

Crossing the street is the thing first-timers worry about most. Walk at a steady pace, do not stop or step back, and let the motorbikes read your line. It works.

Book the water puppet show and any Hạ Long cruise a day or two ahead in high season. For the mausoleum, go early, cover shoulders and knees, and keep quiet in the queue.

Tết, the lunar new year, falls in late January or February. Many family kitchens and shops close for several days and prices for the ones that stay open can rise; plan food and transport ahead if you travel then.

The parent Vietnam guide puts Hanoi's best window at Oct–Apr. That matches the city's own pattern: cooler, drier days from October, a cold snap in December and January, and a warm, humid spring before the summer rains.

May–September is the wet season. It rarely rains all day, but downpours can flood streets for an hour and humidity is high. If you travel then, plan indoor blocks for the afternoon and keep a flexible day for Ninh Bình or Hạ Long.

Avoid, or plan around, Tết if you want the full restaurant and shop scene. The city is quieter and some places shut, but the ones that stay open are memorable.
