Hamburg is spread out, so the deciding factor is usually the nearest U-Bahn or S-Bahn station, not the postcode. Almost every neighbourhood on this page puts you within a 10–25 minute ride of Hauptbahnhof.

Altstadt and Neustadt hold the postcard Hamburg: Rathaus, the Alster lakes, the shopping streets and the main station. You pay for the location, rooms are often small, and street noise near the Reeperbahn edge is real. It is the easiest base if you have two nights and want to walk everywhere.

St Pauli is the nightlife district around the Reeperbahn, with hostels, small hotels and late bars. Expect noise on Friday and Saturday nights; ask for a room away from the street. Sternschanze, next door, is calmer, with cafés, independent shops and good U/S-Bahn links.

HafenCity and Speicherstadt are the modern waterfront: the Elbphilharmonie, warehouse architecture and new hotels. It is quiet at night and slightly apart from the bar scene, which suits couples and business travellers. Altona and Ottensen, west of the centre, feel more residential, with markets, parks and family-sized rooms, at the cost of a longer ride into the centre.

St Georg, around the main station, is practical rather than pretty: mid-range hotels, a wide range of restaurants and quick trains everywhere. It is a good compromise if you arrive late or leave early.

Budget travellers can find hostel dorms from roughly €25–45 a night and simple private rooms from about €70. Mid-range doubles cluster around €90–160 outside the centre and €140–260 in Altstadt. Add the city's overnight culture and tourism tax, charged per night on top of the room rate, and check whether breakfast is included, since many Hamburg hotels price it separately. A multi-day HVV pass usually costs less than single tickets if you plan to move around.

Book early for trade fairs and major concerts, when the whole city fills and prices jump. Ask for a room facing away from the street in St Pauli and St Georg. Confirm the nearest U-Bahn or S-Bahn station before booking, not just the district name, because two hotels in the same area can differ by 15 minutes of walking.

If you arrive by plane, the S1 S-Bahn connects the airport to the centre in about 25 minutes; staying near a station on that line simplifies arrival. For a short trip, prioritise location over room size.
