Hamburg airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Hamburg Airport sits about 8 km north of the centre. The S-Bahn is the only rail link and the default for almost everyone; buses and taxis fill the gaps when the trains stop or when you are carrying too much to change platforms.

The S1 runs from Hamburg Airport station, which is built into the terminal complex, to the city centre. It stops at Ohlsdorf (where the S11 joins), then Altona, Landungsbrücken, Jungfernstieg, Hauptbahnhof and further east. For most hotels in the Altstadt, Neustadt or around the Alster, get off at Jungfernstieg or Hauptbahnhof.

Trains run roughly every 10 minutes during the day and less often in the late evening. Journey time to Hauptbahnhof is about 25 minutes. The airport is in HVV zone A/B, so a single ticket covers the whole ride; a day ticket is worth it if you plan several trips that day.

Buy from the red HVV machines on the platform, in the HVV app, or tap a contactless bank card where readers are installed. Validate paper tickets in the stamping machines before boarding; inspectors do check, and the fine is around €60.

Local buses connect the airport with surrounding districts, but none is a faster route into the centre than the S-Bahn. They matter mainly when the S-Bahn is disrupted or when your destination is off the rail line.

Late at night the S-Bahn thins out. Check the last connection for your date in the HVV app before you fly; if you land after it, a taxi or a night bus is the realistic option. Airport hotels along the ring road often run their own shuttle, so ask before booking a taxi.

Taxis wait outside the terminals. The meter to the city centre usually lands around €30–40 depending on traffic and destination; a ride to Altona or the harbour side can be a little more. Drivers take cards in most cars, but keep some cash as a fallback.

Ride-hailing apps operate in Hamburg and can be cheaper off-peak, though airport pickup points are fixed and add a short walk. For a group of three or four with luggage, a taxi can be close to the per-person S-Bahn cost once you count the convenience.

If you hire a car, note that central Hamburg has low-emission zones and expensive parking. A car makes sense for onward trips to the North Sea coast or Lüneburg Heath, not for a city break.

The S-Bahn single is the cheapest sensible option at about €3.90. A HVV day ticket costs more than a single but pays off after two or three rides. Children under 6 travel free; older children have reduced fares. Group tickets exist for small groups travelling together on the same day.

A taxi at €30–40 is roughly eight to ten times the train fare. That is worth it for a 23:00 arrival with two suitcases, less so at 11:00 with a backpack. Airport parking and car hire add up quickly if the car then sits unused at a city hotel.

Allow 45–60 minutes door to door from landing to a central hotel: passport control, baggage, the walk to the S-Bahn and the ride. Add time on Friday afternoons and during school holidays.

Hamburg Airport is compact and the station is signposted from arrivals. If you are changing to a long-distance train at Hauptbahnhof, the S-Bahn platform is inside the station, so the transfer is a few minutes on foot.
