The reef runs about 2,300 km along the Queensland coast, so there is no single gateway. The reef sits closest to shore in the north, near Cape Tribulation, which makes Cairns and Port Douglas the shortest boat rides; the Whitsundays and Townsville add island and wreck options. Choose one base, book one outer-reef trip, and treat the rest as islands or coast.

- Box jellyfish occur near beaches and river mouths north of 1770 from October to April; most reef snorkelling is outside stinger habitat, but follow operator advice and stinger suits.
