The Grand Traverse Bay Area is two arms of Lake Michigan water plus the land around them: Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties, northern Benzie, and western Antrim. Traverse City sits at the base of the bay and is the only real base — beds, airport, restaurants, and the road out to both peninsulas and the dunes. A car is close to essential: wineries, lighthouses, beaches and trailheads sit 15–45 minutes apart with thin transit between them.
