What the area is like
The northern suburbs run from around Southport up to the Coomera and Pimpama growth corridor, taking in Helensvale, Oxenford, Hope Island, Paradise Point, Runaway Bay and Upper Coomera. It is the Gold Coast's most residential strip: low-rise housing estates, canals, golf courses and the Broadwater, with the theme parks sitting just west of the M1.
This is not the postcard Gold Coast. There is no surf break on the doorstep and no high-rise strip. What you get instead is space, quiet streets, easy parking and quick motorway access north to Brisbane and south to Surfers Paradise. The trade-off is that almost everything worth doing here needs a car or a rideshare.

Should you stay here
Stay if your trip is built around the theme parks, especially with children, or if you are breaking a drive between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. A house or apartment at Hope Island, Coomera or Helensvale gives you parking, a kitchen and a short run to the park gates in the morning.
Do not stay if you picture yourself walking to the beach, eating out every night and swimming in the surf before breakfast. For that, base in Surfers Paradise, Main Beach, Broadbeach or Burleigh Heads and treat the northern suburbs as a day trip. Two nights here is usually enough for two parks; three if you add the Outback Spectacular or a rest day.

Where to eat
Eating here is local rather than destination dining. Hope Island and Paradise Point have the tightest cluster of cafés and restaurants, with the marina and Broadwater frontage doing most of the work. Helensvale and Coomera lean on shopping-centre food courts, chain restaurants and takeaway, which suits families coming back from a park at closing time.
Expect Australian café hours: breakfast from around 6:30am, lunch until mid-afternoon, and many kitchens shutting by 8pm. If you arrive late, plan on a supermarket or a takeaway rather than a sit-down meal.

Getting there and around
By car, the M1 Pacific Motorway is the main approach, with exits between 54 and 62 serving the northern suburbs. For Movie World and Wet'n'Wild, use Exit 60 rather than Exit 62 — the Exit 62 interchange is poorly signed and easy to overshoot. From Surfers Paradise, Southport or Broadbeach, the Gold Coast Highway reaches the western side of the north, while Oxley Drive serves the eastern side.
By public transport, the G:link tram runs north from Surfers Paradise through Main Beach and Southport to Helensvale, with stops at Parkwood East, Parkwood and Helensvale. From Helensvale you still need a bus or rideshare to reach the parks, so allow extra time. Trains on the Brisbane–Gold Coast line also stop at Helensvale and Coomera.
