Broadbeach, Gold Coast: neighborhood guide

Broadbeach sits on the coast immediately south of Surfers Paradise, and the two feel different in practice. Broadbeach is lower-rise in mood even where the towers are tall: the centre of gravity is a strip of restaurants and cafes along Victoria Avenue and Surf Parade, the Kurrawa parkland behind the beach, and the light rail running down the Gold Coast Highway.

The beach itself is broad and gently shelving, with the Kurrawa and Broadbeach surf clubs backing onto the sand. Patrols run in season, and the flagged areas are the ones to swim between. Behind the beach, a wide park strip gives you shade, barbecues and a path for walking or cycling north towards Surfers Paradise and south towards Mermaid Beach.

Two large shopping centres anchor the area: Oasis on Charles Avenue, with a supermarket for beach supplies, and Pacific Fair, the biggest mall on the Gold Coast, about a 15–20 minute walk west of the beach. The Star Gold Coast, a casino and hotel complex on Broadbeach Island, adds theatres, bars and restaurants, and the convention centre next door brings event crowds.

For a first Gold Coast trip, Broadbeach is the safest single base. You can walk to dinner, walk to the beach, and reach Surfers Paradise in a few minutes on the tram without sleeping in the middle of it. Families get parkland, a patrolled beach and apartment-style hotels with kitchens; couples get a dense restaurant strip and bars that stay open late without the noise of the Surfers strip.

The trade-offs are real. Broadbeach is built around the highway and the tram line, so some hotels face traffic noise; ask for a beach-side or upper-floor room. It is not a surf town in the old sense, and the nightlife is restaurants and casino bars rather than clubs. If you want a village atmosphere with a headland walk, Burleigh Heads is a better fit; if you want a quieter, more residential beach with easy access to the Spit, look at Main Beach.

Prices track the season. Apartments and hotels here are cheaper than beachfront Main Beach but can spike during school holidays, the Blues on Broadbeach music festival in May, and major events at the convention centre. Book early for those dates or shift a week.

The eating is concentrated and easy: Victoria Avenue, Surf Parade and the streets around the Oasis centre hold most of the cafes and restaurants, from breakfast places to Thai, Italian, Japanese and modern Australian. Kurrawa Surf Club, on Old Burleigh Road by the beach, is the classic local option for a counter meal with an ocean view, and the Broadbeach surf club does the same a block north.

For a step up, The Star Gold Coast has a cluster of restaurants and bars inside its complex, which is useful on a wet evening. Coffee and casual lunch are plentiful along the strip; the supermarket at Oasis covers self-catering. Expect Gold Coast prices: a main course is commonly A$25–40 (about US$17–27) in 2026, and a pub or club meal is cheaper.

Book ahead on Friday and Saturday nights and during events at the convention centre, when the strip fills up. Most places are within a 10-minute walk of the tram stops, so you can leave the car at the hotel.

From Gold Coast Airport, the 777 bus runs to Broadbeach South tram station in about 30 minutes; a taxi takes roughly 25 minutes and costs around A$50 (2026 estimate). From Brisbane, trains run to Helensvale or Nerang, where you change to the tram or a bus; driving down the M1 takes about an hour outside peak traffic.

Once here, the G:link light rail is the backbone. Broadbeach North and Broadbeach South stations put Surfers Paradise, Southport and the hospital precinct within a short ride, and the tram is the easiest way to avoid parking. Buses cover the beaches and Pacific Fair. Walking works for the beach, the restaurant strip and the mall; cycling is good on the coastal path.

If you are hiring a car, note that parking near the beach and Pacific Fair is metered or time-limited in busy periods, and many hotels charge for parking. For a short stay built around the beach and restaurants, you can skip the car entirely.
